“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by”- Robert Frost.
I arrived in Latvia on September 1, 2025, feeling a mix of curiosity, fear, and excitement. This was my first time studying overseas, my first extended absence from home, and my first significant step into the unknown as a Filipino. I still clearly recall asking myself, “Am I really prepared for this?” However, one insight helped me move forward: not trying is the biggest failure in life.
In a short time, Daugavpils University evolved into more than a mere educational institution. It evolved into a place where excellence, honesty, harmony, and compassion are not just ideals, but also regular practices. The lecturers were encouraging, thought-provoking, and receptive to different viewpoints. I developed my academic and intercultural skills and widened my perspective by studying with students from other nations.
Erasmus+ is about growth, not just academics. During my visit, I had the opportunity to explore various regions of the Republic of Latvia, fully immersing myself in its rich history, customs, and culture. I became more self-reliant and self-assured, learned to value diversity, and adjusted to new situations. New lessons were imparted every day; some were taught in classrooms, while others were learned through discussions, cross-cultural interactions, and quiet times of introspection. I gained experience navigating life abroad, accepting discomfort as a learning opportunity, and adopting a broader perspective on the world.
