An online seminar dedicated to “Women in STEM” was successfully organized by Daugavpils University and held on March 11, 2025 as part of the project OpenEU initiative. The event brought together experts and academics from across the Europe to discuss the challenges and opportunities for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The seminar aimed to promote gender equality in STEM fields, share best practices, and discuss how to inspire young women to pursue careers in the mentioned disciplines. The event featured keynote speeches, panel discussions, and interactive sessions covering topics such as breaking gender stereotypes in STEM education and careers., the importance of mentorship and networking for women in STEM, innovative policies and initiatives to support women’s participation in STEM, success stories of female scientists, engineers, latest data analysis.
Prominent speakers included the representatives of Daugavpils University, Latvia, and the National University of Distance Education (UNED), Spain: Inna Samuilika, Ph.D. Natural Sciences; Covadonga Rodrigo San Juan, Dr. Ing. Telecomunication and Esther Gil Cid, professor at the School of Industrial Engineering of UNED. The experts shared insights on the topic, comparing situation in different countries around Europe and sharing good practices. Other participants of the seminar included representatives from all the OpenEU partner universities, that emphasized the importance of inclusivity and diversity in STEM.
The Daugavpils University team expressed gratitude to all participants and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing gender equality in STEM. Plans for future workshops and collaborative initiatives have been also discussed to ensure continued support for women in science and technology, as well as other under-represented groups in higher education in accordance with the project’s aims and deliverables.
