Admission Requirements– Master’s degree in humanities (linguistics and literary studies, translation science, history, philosophy) or social sciences (intercultural relations, social anthropology, social psychology, etc.) or an equivalent 2nd level higher professional education in the relevant field.
– English language knowledge at B2 level.
Entrance Examination– examination in linguistics/literature/translation (depending on the selected subprogram; discussions on the submitted research application (report);
– examination in a foreign language (English, German or French).
Study course descriptions

The aim of the joint doctoral study programme is

to prepare professional scientists in the field of linguistics, literary studies and translation science with high research potential, who create new knowledge and productively use an interdisciplinary approach, are competent to raise and solve the most important problems of modern literary studies, linguistics and translation studies, developing and strengthening Latvia’s scientific potential, by developing original and current research in the selected sub-programme; more broadly, it means participation in the formation of the intellectual elite of Latvia and Europe, as well as the ability to influence the development direction and priorities of the above-mentioned scientific fields.

Knowledge

  • Knows and understands the regularities and main paradigms of the linguistic and literary process, current scientific theories and findings, manages research methodology and modern research methods in the field of linguistics, literary studies and translation science and in the connection of different fields.
  • Understands the basic concepts of linguistics, literary studies and translation science, freely and productively operates with scientific terminology in Latvian, English and other languages related to the research; manages the specialized knowledge in the chosen research direction according to the specific sub-sector of science and the most important findings of the related sub-sectors related to the research topic.
  • Understands the interdisciplinary relationship between the humanities and social sciences, as well as the economic and social context of the humanities.

Skills

  • Independently formulates and critically analyses research problems and topical issues, evaluates and chooses or independently develops appropriate methods for scientific research and the methodological strategy of the research, interprets the results in a wider context, thus contributing to the expansion of the boundaries of knowledge and/or giving new understanding to existing knowledge, its use in practice, implementing original research, part of which is represented in internationally cited publications.
  • Make scientifically based decisions in solving research problems, critically evaluate own and others’ research, present and argue their point of view, communicates about his field of scientific activity (his field) with wide scientific circles and society in general, is involved in the implementation of research projects of international importance, cooperates effectively in disciplinary and interdisciplinary research groups.
  • Integrates the results of scientific research in study courses at the university, in managing the scientific works of students of various levels (bachelor’s, master’s) programs, in science transfer events.

Competence

  • Integrates the results of scientific research in the university’s study courses, in managing the scientific works of students of various levels (bachelor’s, master’s) programmes, in science transfer events.
  • Independently improves own scientific qualification, learning about current trends in linguistics, literary studies and translation science: offers innovative ideas for research projects, engages in the development of projects and their application to relevant programmes and funds, leads research tasks in organizations that require extensive research knowledge and skills, thus continuing to develop progress in the chosen research field in an academic and professional context.
  • Independently leads a scientific team, working group in the relevant sub-sector of science, organizes his research activity in accordance with the scientist’s code of ethics, strengthens and independently improves digital competence.
