Summary of the project:
The aim of the project is to reduce the fragmentation of study programmes in the study direction “Education, Pedagogy and Sports” at Daugavpils University and to strengthen the sharing of resources. As a result of the project, Daugavpils University, in cooperation with other Latvian higher education institutions and social partners, based on the existing study programme resources, will develop, license, approve, and include two new programmes in the accredited study programme “Education, Pedagogy and Sports”: 1) an integrated professional bachelor’s study programme in pedagogy “School” (42) with sub-programmes in languages and social and civic education; 2) a second-level higher education study programme “Schooler” (46) with sub-programmes in languages, social and civic education, and health and physical education. Within the framework of the project, it is planned to include the new study programmes in the accredited study direction “Education, Pedagogy and Sports” (six programmes) by June 30, 2023. The Latvian education system is currently undergoing a reform of the general education curriculum, moving towards competence-based education, which sets out conceptually different requirements for the training of new teachers and the professional development of existing teachers to work with the new curriculum. Competence-based general education focuses on the development of the basic and cross-cutting competences necessary for human action, which will be ensured by graduates of the newly created study programmes at DU when they start working in educational institutions in Latvia. Within the framework of the two new programmes, DU will offer two alternatives for obtaining a teacher’s qualification: for applicants who have studied in other bachelor’s programmes and obtained education in a field unrelated to pedagogy, and for applicants who choose to pursue a teaching career after completing secondary education.Daugavpils University will implement the project in cooperation with the University of Latvia, Liepaja University, Rezekne Academy of Technologies, Latvian Academy of Sports Education and Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, as well as experts from the National Centre of project “Competence Approach in Education Content”, teachers’ methodological associations, the foundation “Iespējamā misija” and representatives of the Ministry of Defence. Thanks to participation in the programme “Growth and Employment” 8.2.1. specific support objective “Reducing the fragmentation of study programmes and strengthening the sharing of resources” project, DU teaching staff, as cooperation partners, are also involved in the development and implementation of study programmes and sub-programmes in the field of “Education, pedagogy and sports” at other Latvian higher education institutions at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level.
