Admission requirement

  • secondary education;
  • the specialisation Specialist in Police Work (with the qualification to be awarded as a junior officer of the State Police): absence of restrictions under Section 4 of the Law on the Course of Service of Officials with Special Service Ranks in the Institutions of the System of the Ministry of the Interior and the Prison Administration;
  • the specialisation Specialist in Penitentiary Work (with the qualification Penitentiary and Probation Work Specialist to be awarded): absence of restrictions under Article 4 of the Law on the Course of Service of Officials with Special Service Ranks in the System of the Ministry of the Interior and the Prison Administration;
  • the specialisation Specialist in general and cyber security of organisations (with the qualification security specialist to be awarded): No restrictions under Article 15 of the Law on Security Guard Activities.

The aim of the study programme

To prepare highly qualified, internationally competitive specialists in police, penitentiary work or
organizational security, who are able to independently plan and carry out tasks related to the profession,
innovative research, and make a contribution to the growth of the prosperity of the Republic of Latvia and
the European Union.

The task of the programme according to its specific aim is as follows:

to provide the content of study courses and the practical placement in compliance with the basic demands of the obtainable professional qualification and specific demands that are necessary for completing the tasks and professional duties of the respective profession according to professional standards – police officer of the middle commanders (subaltern) (PS 0118), border guard subaltern (18.05.2010. regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 461, appendix 2), prison inspector (11.07.2006. regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers No.569) or security officer (PS 0151) as well as to the respective European qualification framework structure level of knowledge, skills, and competence (02.12.2008. regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers No.990).

As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the graduate will acquire and be able to demonstrate

Knowledge:

  • Able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of facts, theories and regularities necessary for personal growth and development, civic participation, social integration and continuing education.
  • Able to understand in detail and demonstrate knowledge of various specific facts, principles, processes and concepts in a certain field of study or professional activity in standard and non-standard situations.
  • Knows technologies and methods for performing learning tasks or work tasks in the profession.

Skills:

  • Able to plan and organize work, use various methods, technologies (including information and communication technologies), devices, tools and materials to perform tasks.
  • Able to find, evaluate and creatively use information for the execution of educational or professional tasks and solutions to problems.
  • Able to communicate in at least two languages in writing and orally in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
  • Able to work independently, learn and develop in the profession.

Competencies:

  • Is motivated to build a future career, continue education, lifelong learning in a knowledge-oriented democratic, multilingual and multicultural society in Europe and in the world.
  • Able to plan and carry out learning or work tasks in the profession individually, in a team or leading team work.
  • Able to take responsibility for the quality and quantity of learning or professional activity results.
