The main directions of the laboratory are the development of zoocultural technologies, research on the ecology of rare and protected reptiles and amphibians in Latvia for the purpose of protecting, study of infestations of alien species dangerous to Latvian nature. For many years, researchers, in cooperation with foreign scientists, carry out European and Latvian scientific and nature conservation projects, developing zoocultural technologies for fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), running toad (Bufo calamita) and European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), successfully restoring their populations in Latvia and fighting invasive species of Chinese sleeper (Perccottus glenii), round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas) and parasitic fungus.
