Overall goal of the project: to take measures to ensure the protection of the hermit beetle Osmoderma eremita (syn. barnabita), by creating a cross-border ecological network connecting the populations of this species in Lithuania and Latvia – by creating and managing “green corridors” or species distribution routes, planning and implementing the necessary management measures both within the specially protected nature areas of the Natura 2000 network and outside them (e.g. in avenues, parks), as well as providing the necessary research and preparation of justification for the improvement of the Natura 2000 network.

Project tasks in Latvia:

• Research into the most important areas of the ecological network of the hermit beetle
• Development of a conservation plan for the species;
• Development of nature conservation plans for specially protected nature territories;
• Practical management activities for habitat restoration, management and maintenance (avenues, parks and monumental trees);
• Expansion of the species’ ecological network by creating artificial habitats;
• Development of guidelines for the management of parks and green areas;
• Development and implementation of park reconstruction projects;
• Development of a training programme on the management of avenues, parks and plantations;
• Development and testing of a study course for arborists;
• Updating the Nature Data Management System ‘Ozols’ with current information on the hermit beetle and its habitats;
• Education events and campaigns about the nature.

Planned results:

• A developed map of the ecological network of the hermit beetle (scale 1:5000) covering Lithuania and Latvia;
• A developed report on inventoried and managed trees suitable for the hermit;
• A developed conservation plan for the hermit beetle;
• Developed six nature conservation plans;
• The updated monitoring methodology for the hermit beetle in Latvia;
• Added information on the hermit beetle and its habitats to the Nature Data Management System OZOLS;
• The updated application for identifying monumental trees in Latvia;
• Prepared education materials for lessons on nature;
• A developed and tested training course;
• Guidelines developed for the conservation and management of parks and historic plantings;
• Six reconstruction projects;
• Prepared scientifically based documentation for the creation of new Natura 2000 sites or the expansion of existing sites.

Project budget

LIFE Osmo Baltic is implemented with the financial support from the European Union LIFE Environment Programme and the State Regional Development Agency. The total budget of the project is EUR 11,005,398.49, of which 75% is EU funding.

DU budget for the project: EUR 1,073,978, of which EUR 805,484 is EU funding and EUR 193,316 is national co-financing.
