Project implementation period: 22/12/2020 – 31/12/2028

The overall goal of the project is to implement the Natura 2000 priority action programme* in Latvia, ensuring the beneficial protection status of habitats and species of EU importance, as well as developing appropriate and innovative approaches to addressing current nature protection issues.

Three pilot themes have been selected for the project: EU-protected grasslands, EU-protected forests, and the control of invasive or alien species.

Project objectives:

  • Improve the preservation status of habitats and species by setting objectives for preservation at national and regional level and developing habitat management plans to ensure appropriate management.
  • Improve the Natura 2000 network.
  • Improve the system for developing nature preservation plans and the regulatory framework.
  • Promote the preservation and sustainable management of natural values on private land by developing effective support mechanisms and innovative approaches.
  • Develop an effective invasive species management system.
  • Establish a modern and centralized nature data management system.
  • Strengthen the capacity of the organizations involved and promote cooperation between state, non-governmental organisations and scientific institutions.
  • Promote the involvement and awareness of stakeholders, especially private landowners, of the importance of preservation the biodiversity and the integration of these issues into various sectors.
  • Promote public awareness and knowledge of nature preservation issues and the role of voluntary involvement in the preservation of biodiversity.

Project budget

LIFE-IP LatViaNature is implemented with financial support from the European Union’s LIFE Environment Programme and the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund of the State Regional Development Agency. The total budget of the project is EUR 19.49 million, of which 60% is EU funding.

Total budget of DU: EUR 411,557, of which EUR 246,934 is EU funding.
