In honour of EU Erasmus+ programme 35th anniversary from 19th – 23rd September 2022 DU organized International Staff Training Week with the focus on promoting internationalization and networking among DU partners from EU and Partner countries. Staff week programme included seminars, workshops, presentations, individual meetings and lectures as well as active cultural programme allowing international partners to immerse in to the local culture and traditions of Latgale region and Latvia.

Dzintra Iliško, professor of the Centre of Sustainable Education of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences has engaged international participants into a discussion within the lecture that she has presented “Why international cooperation matters in higher education.”  She discussed about the international trends of internalization of higher education and the development of global competence of students that was successfully implemented in Daugavpils University within the EU Erasmus + programme. Dzintra Iliško discussed the need of higher education to attend the needs of twenty-first century students who live in an interconnected, diverse and intensively changing world by developing intercultural and global competences. International cooperation and exchange programmes help students to investigate the world beyond their immediate environment by examining issues of local, global, and cultural significance, by recognizing understanding, and appreciating the perspectives and world views of others; communicating ideas effectively with diverse audiences by engaging them in open, appropriate, and effective interactions across cultures and taking  action for collective well-being and sustainable development both locally and globally.

Discussions on the international cooperation continued as all partners shared perspective and activities of the field of their expertise and presented their home institutions.

On behalf of the DU international relations team and Erasmus+ programme, we thank all the participants choosing Daugavpils and Latvia, and we hope that the staff training week has created a platform for new ideas and inter institutional partnerships.
