Students enrolled in full-time or part-time higher education programmes are eligible to apply for study mobility, including short-cycle (professional) programmes, first-cycle programmes (academic Bachelor’s, professional Bachelor’s, professional programmes), second-cycle programmes (academic Master’s, professional Master’s programmes) and third-cycle programmes (academic Doctoral programmes).

THE GOALS OF STUDY MOBILITY:

  • Give student the opportunity to spend a defined period of study at DU partner universities abroad;
  • Give students the opportunity to gain valuable academic, language and cultural experience by studying in other European countries;
  • Strengthen cooperation between higher education institutions and improve the learning environment at host universities;
  • Support the development of well-qualified and internationally experienced young people – future professionals. Students may participate in study mobility from the 2nd year of studies (only for Bachelor’s level students).

Study duration:

Long-term mobility : 2 – 12 months

Short-term mobility : 5 – 30 days (short-term student mobility must be combined with a virtual mobility period)

If a student is participating in short-term mobility, the physical mobility period must be combined with the virtual mobility period and the student will receive at least 3 ECTS for this mobility period.

Erasmus+ studies are based on inter-institutional agreements, so check the list of partner universities in advance and choose the most suitable host university for you.

Students who have previously participated in study or internship mobility at the same study level and have received an Erasmus+ grant may participate in the mobility again, provided that the total duration does not exceed 12 months per study level.

Studying at a foreign partner university under Erasmus+ is free of charge.

Students participating in the Erasmus+ programme receive financial support (a grant) to cover living expenses, including travel and insurance costs.

All students receive financial support for travel. The amount is calculated using the European Commission distance calculator.

If, according to the European Commission distance calculator, the distance between the sending and receiving institutions is up to 500 km, then travel should be carried out using a low-emission or environmentally friendly mode of transport.

Green travel modes include train, bus, and carpooling (at least two people travelling in one car).

Green travel support may be granted only if the majority of the journey is completed using environmentally friendly transport.

Green travel support cannot be granted if environmentally friendly transport is used only in one direction (e. g., going to the country of mobility by bus but returning by airplane).

Inclusion Support

In line with the principles of the Higher Education Charter, study mobility ensures equal opportunities, fair access, inclusion, and diversity regardless of the student’s background. Traineeship mobility is open to a wide range of participants, including those with fewer opportunities, such as people with disabilities (physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments, which, in interaction with various barriers, may limit full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others), health issues (health conditions, including serious illnesses, chronic conditions, or any physical or mental health situation that prevents participation in the programme), barriers related to education and training systems, cultural differences, social barriers, economic barriers, barriers related to discrimination, and geographical barriers.

Erasmus+ Programme Inclusion Support (for individuals with limited opportunities)  may be granted to long-term or short-term study mobility participants who meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • A person with a Group I, II, or III disability (proof of disability required);
  • A person with health problems requiring outpatient care (a medical certificate confirming the need for outpatient care is required);
  • A person with refugee or alternative status (status-confirming document required – permanent residence permit in Latvia or temporary residence permit in Latvia);
  • A Ukrainian citizen (proof of temporary residence permit in Latvia required);
  • A person from a large family or a family caring for a child with disabilities (Latvian “Honorary Family Certificate 3+ Family Card” required);
  • An orphan, a person without parental care (orphan certificate required) or a person who has lost a provider (supporting status-confirming documentation required);
  • A person from a low-income or financially disadvantaged person (status-confirming document required).

Application Deadlines and Procedure

For the autumn semester – apply by March 15.

For the spring semester – apply by September 15.

Students must complete the study mobility application online at – https://exchange.du.lv/

Submitted applications are registered and sent to the student’s faculty council, where the student’s participation in the Erasmus+ programme is reviewed. Then it can be approved, or rejected. If the student is approved for studies abroad, the DU Erasmus+ coordinator nominates the student to the foreign partner university. The host (partner) university then contacts the student directly and provides information about the application procedure and required documents. After submitting all required documents to the host university, the student will receive an Acceptance Letter confirming admission to studies at the partner university.

Once the Acceptance Letter has been received, the student must forward it to the Erasmus+ coordinator by email:
erasmus@du.lv

Application Documentation

Each foreign university has its own application procedure and required documents for registration for exchange studies.

Important: It is crucial to follow the application deadline set by the host university and submit all documents on time.
Most host universities require the following documents:

  1. Online application form;
  2. Transcript of Records;
  3. Copy of passport or ID (in cases where a visa is required);
  4. Online Learning Agreement;
  5. Health insurance (European Health Insurance Card – EHIC)

Learning Agreement (Online Learning Agreement)
This document is filled out by the student on the online platform https://learning-agreement.eu/. Students log in to the platform using their DUIS login username and password. Instructions on how to complete and submit the Online Learning Agreement are available here.

Before the Mobility

Once the student has received approval from their faculty, the programme coordinator regularly organises informational webinars or in-person meetings to inform students about the next steps and help them prepare successfully for their study period abroad.

The student must have:

  • Received an official Acceptance Letter confirming admission to the host university and sent it to erasmus@du.lv (The Acceptance Letter may be sent either to the student’s or the coordinator’s email address);
  • Prepared and submitted an individual study plan to the project coordinator;
  • Prepared a Study Agreement (Online Learning Agreement – OLA), signed by all three parties: the student, DU, and the host university;
  • Completed the foreign language assessment (OLS) and, if required, started language training on the EU Academy platform;
  • Carefully reviewed information about the host country, including practical details such as arrival procedures, registration for studies, etc.;
  • Successfully completed the semester examination session;
  • Completed the required survey for the preparation of the funding agreement (sent to the student by the coordinator via email);
  • Purchased appropriate insurance. The insurance must cover at least health insurance, liability insurance, and accident insurance.
  • For intra-European mobility, basic health insurance is provided by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which entitles the student to state-provided emergency and necessary healthcare under the same conditions as residents of the host country;
  • Signed the Erasmus+ study mobility funding agreement (prepared by the coordinator).

During the Mobility

The student must:

  • Upon arrival at the host university, obtain an Arrival Certificate confirming arrival and the start of studies;
  • Comply with all internal rules and regulations of the host higher education institution;
  • Strictly comply with all obligations set out in the Erasmus+ study mobility funding agreement;
  • Be exempt from tuition fees, registration fees, examination fees, and charges for access to laboratory and library services at the host university. Fees may be charged for student organisations and for the use of certain materials (e.g. photocopies or laboratory materials), under the same conditions as applied to local students.
  • If necessary, make changes to the Study Agreement within one month after the start of studies abroad (Learning Agreement for Studies – Changes) via the online platform: https://learning-agreement.eu/;
  • Inform the DU coordinator at least one month before the end of the study period of any changes in the duration of studies (if the period is shorter or longer than originally approved). The coordinator will update the funding agreement and recalculate the grant accordingly.

After the Mobility

The student receives a Confirmation of Stay from the host university coordinator and, upon returning to Latvia, submits it to the programme coordinator or sends a scanned copy to erasmus@du.lv.

Reporting Documents

After the end of the mobility period and within 30 calendar days of receiving the invitation by email, the student must:

  • complete and submit the participant’s individual report;
  • submit the Confirmation of Stay, indicating the actual start and end dates of the mobility period;
  • submit the Transcript of Records. The host university’s coordinator is entitled to send this document to the student or the coordinator within 5 weeks after the completion of studies;
  • share their experience by sending a study mobility experience story to erasmus@du.lv.
