On October 26 and 28, 2026, students from Daugavpils University (DU) participated in training sessions for a Professional Development Programme (PDP) developed within the framework of the PULSE-ART project. Students from the DU Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – future educators – took part in the sessions for the programme’s second module, titled “Foundations of Cultural Education: From Policy to Practice”. The sessions were led by PULSE-ART project researchers: Dzintra Iliško, PhD, Professor, and Oksana Kovzele, Dr. philol., Leading Researcher, from the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS).

During the training, participants were introduced to the goals of the PULSE-ART project, its methodology and its expected outcomes. One of the project’s key deliverables is the development of the PDP, which offers free training for professionals in the education and cultural sectors across Europe and beyond. PULSE-ART PDP consists of six modules, based on a shared pedagogical framework that emphasises experiential learning, exploring, and inclusive participation:

  • M1. Introduction to Cultural Awareness and Arts Integration
  • M2. Foundations of Cultural Education: From Policy to Practice
  • M3. Practical Applications of the Arts
  • M4. Technology for Arts in Education
  • M5. Assessment and Evaluation for Arts in Education
  • M6. Reflection and Future Implementation

The programme combines learning through the arts, reflection, collaboration, and digital practices to enhance “Cultural Awareness and Expression” (CAE), one of the eight EU Key Competences for Lifelong Learning. It is designed for educators, cultural sector professionals, artists, and others interested in deepening their understanding of the interplay between the arts and education. The programme materials are available in eight languages – English, French, Greek, Latvian, Maltese, Arabic, Spanish, and Dutch – on the project’s digital platform, the PULSE-ART Observatory for Arts in Education. Free online training sessions in English will take place on November 6–7, 2026. Further information is available HERE.

As part of Module 2, “Foundations of Cultural Education: From Policy to Practice”, how arts education policies and guidelines at global, European, and local levels are translated into practice when working with children and young people in educational settings. They identified gaps between policy directives and their practical application, critically analysed international frameworks, including documents developed by UNESCO, and designed their own mini-learning activities. Participants also explored how policy recommendations could inform the development of more inclusive and creative educational approaches.

The training took place within the framework of the project “Promoting Understanding and Lifelong learning Successful Education through the ARTs and culture” (PULSE-ART), funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.
