The first collections of Daugavpils University Herbarium (DAU) have been dated in 1952, when
the education of teachers in Daugavpils Pedagogical Institute (Daugavpils University) was started.
The Institute of Systematic Biology (Institute of Life Sciences and Technology) was established in 2006, where the botanical laboratory was started. Currently, all herbarium collections of Daugavpils University have been compiled and also wide – scale floristic studies and herbarium collections from Latvia and Latgalia have been initiated.
Several valuable herbarium collections were added to Herbarium of Daugavpils University: waterplant collections of Emīlija Ozoliņa and Uvis Suško, Latvian tree and shrub collection of Kārlis Starcs and fungi exicatae of Jūlijs Smarods.
