Admission requirements

Secondary vocational education or general secondary education

*For secondary education documents the average annual mark in the compulsory subjects is not less than 7, (if the average mark is less then 7 you have an opportunity to pass an examination – interview (oral examination). The lowest threshold of the average mark is – 6 ) .

*The average mark in compulsory subjects is calculated from the following subjects of secondary education:

– in educational programs that were thought in Latvian: Latvian language, Latvian literature, English language, Russian language, German language, French language, mathematics (algebra, geometry), informatics, sports, natural sciences, physics, chemistry, biology, Latvian and world history, music and visual arts, if they are listed in the secondary education document;

– in minority education programs: Latvian language and literature, minority language, minority literature, minority language and literature, English language, German language, French language, Russian language, mathematics (algebra, geometry), informatics, sports, natural sciences, physics, chemistry, biology, Latvian and world history, music and visual arts, if they are listed in the secondary education document;

The overall rating consists of:

average marks in compulsory subjects, which are confirmed by a secondary education document – 25%;

assessments in centralized examinations in Latvian, mathematics, foreign language (or STIP in a foreign language) – 25% (for persons who have completed secondary education before 2004 (excluding), as well as for persons who have acquired secondary education abroad or for persons with special needs: a) final mark in Latvian language and literature, b) final mark in mathematics, c) final mark in a foreign language / or STIP in a foreign language)

entrance examination (educational case analysis): oral and written (200-300 words) – 50%.

Advantages:

  • Recommendations and / or evidence of previous experience in pedagogical work (eg work in children’s and youth camps, Sunday school; nanny work, etc.) and voluntary work (eg participation in youth NGOs, interest education, organization and / or implementation of various camps, courses, seminars uc).
  • 2. Participants of scientific conferences and Olympiads of Latvian state or regional students (winners of 1st-3rd places).

During your studies you will learn


The content of the study program is structured in study courses and practices, which ensure gradual acquisition of professional competence and are aimed at the integration of theoretical and practical experience.

In the 1st study year, students acquire general education study courses Basics of Teacher’s Professional Activity, Psychology for Teachers, Social Emotional Learning, Legal Aspects of the Pedagogical Process, Research in Education, which provides an understanding of studies and integration of study course content in pre-school education practice. Study courses help develop skills to analyze and structure the acquired knowledge and form a connection between theory and practical pedagogical activity.

Theoretical study courses of the branch Childhood Pedagogy, Child Development Physiology, Hygiene and Basics of First Aid, Play and Interdisciplinarity, students develop an understanding of a child’s holistic personality development and competence in the implementation of a child-centered approach to pre-school education practice.

Branch professional specialization study courses Content and learning approaches in the field of health and physical activity, Social and civic study content and learning approaches, Technology study content and learning approaches start to acquire professional competence in the content of study fields and integrated teaching methodology.

Students are provided with an opportunity to develop and improve professional competence in internships, organizing and managing the pedagogical process in pre-school educational institutions.

During the pre-school education practice, students get acquainted with the pre-school educational institution as a microsystem, as well as the connection of children’s and adults’ teaching and upbringing work with other microsystems and society in general.

Early childhood internship allows students to improve their skills to observe, organize and manage the activities of early preschool children in a variety of activities.

In the 2nd study year, students continue to acquire theoretical knowledge in general education study courses Education Management, Inclusive Education, State, Civil and Environmental Protection, the content of which improves competence to solve topical issues in pre-school education in various social environments.

Theoretical study course of the branch, Organization and management of the pre-school pedagogical process students acquire competence to plan and manage the pre-school pedagogical process for cross-cutting process.

Branch professional specialization study courses Language learning content and learning approaches, Content and learning approaches of the field of cultural understanding and self-expression in art Content and learning approaches in the field of science, Mathematics curriculum and learning approaches, students continue to master the methodology of curriculum areas.

Students also improve the competence to plan and implement pedagogical activities independently, purposefully and responsibly in the pedagogical internship of a Preschool teacher, which ensures the transition from semi-independent to independent professional activities, as a result of which students’ research, self-evaluation and self-reflection skills are improved. process and to obtain research data for the development of a qualification paper. The implementation of practice tasks promotes students’ independence, responsibility and improves skills to use previously acquired knowledge in the pre-school professional field, thus creating an understanding of the teacher’s professional activity and gaining information about the specifics of pre-school education, teaching and upbringing process.

At the beginning of the study year, students also start choosing the topic of their qualification paper, which they implement during the study year and defend in the state final examination, where the emphasis is on the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Defending a qualification paper provides an opportunity to strengthen the acquired professional knowledge and skills and allows to get prepared to receive a professional qualification


Successful completion of the program is an opportunity

  • To work in pre-school education institutions or other public or private structures related to pre-school education.
  • To continue studies in Daugavpils University professional bachelor study program “Primary education teacher”, starting from the 3rd study year, to acquire qualification “Primary education teacher” and obtain bachelor’s degree in education, as well as to continue studies in professional programs intended for studies on the basis of first level higher professional education
