The Humanities Academy for Youth was launched in February 2011 with the aim of fostering young people’s interest in literature, linguistics, foreign languages, theatre, cinema, visual arts, religion, folklore, and other fields of culture and the arts. It also seeks to motivate youth to pursue studies in the humanities in the future.
The academy is attended by students in grades 10–12 from Latvian secondary schools, vocational school students, and all those with a deeper interest in the humanities.
The full cycle of the Humanities Academy for Youth programme lasts three years (from October to May, with classes held once a month on Saturdays), although participants may also choose a one- or two-year programme option.
It is an opportunity to:
- participate in free lectures and practical workshops led by knowledgeable and experienced professionals in Latvian culture and the arts, as well as lecturers from the Faculty of Humanities of Daugavpils University;
- receive a certificate at the end of each academic year, signed by the DU Vice-Rector for Studies and the Head of the Academy;
- gain an additional 10 admission points for study programmes at Daugavpils University, such as Philology (Latvian, Russian, English, German, Polish with a second foreign language), History / History (Cultural History), and Eastern European Culture and Business Relations (up to 30 extra points over three years);
- learn under the honorary patronage of the renowned Latvian film director, screenwriter, actor, Commander of the Order of the Three Stars, Honorary Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, and public figure Jānis Streičs.
