Daugavpils University is implementing the project in the framework of the programme “Growth and Employment” Specific Objective 1.1.1 “To increase the research and innovative capacity of scientific institutions of Latvia and the ability to attract external financing, investing in human resources and infrastructure” within the framework of measure 1.1.1.4. “Development of R&D infrastructure in smart specialization areas and strengthening the institutional capacity of scientific institutions,”

Developing research infrastructure in smart specialization areas and institutional capacity at Daugavpils University”, agreement No. 1.1.1.4/17/I/008

The aim of the project is to strengthen the institutional capacity of Daugavpils University (DU) by concentrating research resources and modernizing the research infrastructure of DU and the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LIAE) in areas of smart specialization in order to promote the use of research infrastructure in solving economic problems.

The project aims to develop the necessary infrastructure by purchasing new equipment in the priority development areas defined in internationally recognized research programmes: mathematics, physics, nanomaterials, materials engineering, and biology.

It is planned to implement a project not related to economic activity, promoting several areas of specialization identified in the Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3): knowledge-intensive bio-economy; bio-medicine, medical technologies, bio-pharmacy and bio-technologies; smart materials, technologies and engineering systems; smart energy.

Planned activities to achieve the objective: Establishment of the DU agency “Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology”, purchase of scientific apparatus and equipment for the implementation of the DU research programme “Mathematics, Physics, Nanomaterials, Materials Engineering” and the research programme “Biology,” as well as the purchase of equipment for the joint research programme “Biology” with the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology.

Project implementation period: 01.12.2017.- 31.10.2020.

Project partner: Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology

Total project funding: EUR 3,069,684.21, including European Regional Development Fund funding (80.75%) – EUR 2,478,770.00, state budget funding (14.25%) – EUR 437,430.00, DU and LIAE funding (5%) – EUR 153,484.21.
