On 30-31 January 2025, Daugavpils University (DU) will host the International Humanities conference, The January Papers, previously known as DU Faculty of Humanities Scientific Readings, until 2023.
The conference will focus on research trends that DU specialises in, including comparative literature, contrastive linguistics, translation studies, regional studies, and cultural studies.
Every year, the conference attracts many world-renowned, authoritative scholars and emerging researchers from Latvia and abroad. The 35th International Humanities conference at DU, January Papers, will feature 84 speakers from Estonia, Germany, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine.
The plenary session of the January Papers will be dedicated to Dr. habil. philol. Zaiga Ikere, Professor Emeritus and former Rector of DU (2002–2007), who is also an Honorary Citizen of Daugavpils. She is celebrating a significant anniversary this year, marking over 40 years of commitment to academic and scientific work at DU.
The 35th International Humanities Conference at DU, The January Papers, will be organised into five thematic workgroups: The English language: synchrony and diachrony; The Baltic languages: synchrony and diachrony; The Slavic languages in the historical and cultural context; A human and the world in culture and history and Literature and culture: process, interaction, problems. This year, the conference will adopt a hybrid format, with sessions available in person at DU and online via the ZOOM platform.
The conference is supported by DU Lifelong Learning, Culture, and Science Communication Society Intelekta Parks and organised by DU in cooperation with the University of Siena, Campus Arezzo.
After evaluation by the scientific editorial board and reviewers, the conference materials will be compiled into collections of scientific articles published by DU and indexed in the internationally recognised database, EBSCO: Cultural Studies, Literature & Culture: Process, Interaction, Problems and Language in Various Cultural Contexts.
The DU Humanities Conference, known as The January Papers, has been held annually on the last Thursday and Friday of January since 1991. The timing of the conference has influenced its name among organisers and participants. The idea of the conference was inspired by the emeritus professor of DU, Dr. habil. philol., the corresponding Latvian Academy of Sciences member Fjodors Fjodorovs (1939–2020), and Professor Joel Veinberg (1922–2011).
