On March 18–19, 2025, the core team of the Smart Windows for Net-Zero Energy Buildings (SWEB) project, led by Dr. Juris Puraņs, visited Daugavpils University. The aim of the visit was to strengthen institutional cooperation, share best practices in capacity building, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.
The productive two-day visit featured discussions on potential joint research initiatives, including student exchange programs and shared use of research infrastructure – such as spray-coating facilities and atomic force microscopy (AFM). These efforts are expected to enhance scientific output and foster co-authored publications.
The discussions also included participation from the heads of newly established research groups at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL), Dr. Dmitrijs Poļakovs and Dr. Aleksejs Zubkins. Roundtable meetings highlighted the importance of collaboration within the framework of nationally funded research grants and emphasized the need to build strong, sustainable partnerships between scientific institutions.
A key outcome of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the SWEB project and Daugavpils University. The memorandum was signed by Dr. Juris Puraņs (SWEB Project Leader and Head of the Thin Films Laboratory at ISSP UL) and Dr. Dr. Vjačeslavs Gerbreders (Head of the G. Liberts Innovative Microscopy Centre at Daugavpils University). This agreement lays the foundation for closer collaboration, shared resources, and knowledge exchange.
This significant step aligns with the mission of the SWEB project — to strengthen the European Research Area by promoting cross-border collaboration, scientific excellence, and innovation. Both parties look forward to deepening their cooperation in the months and years ahead.
