DU Representatives Participate in the International Conference “Intellectual Property as a Catalyst for Innovation and Growth: Connecting Research, Technology and SMEs” and the Latvian Intellectual Property Awards Ceremony

To mark its 105th anniversary, the Latvian Patent Office organized an international conference titled “Intellectual Property as a Catalyst for Innovation and Growth: Connecting Research, Technology and SMEs” and hosted the Latvian Intellectual Property Awards Ceremony on April 8, 2025, in Riga.

Daugavpils University was represented by Vice-Rector for Development Jānis Kudiņš, Vice-Rector for Science Prof. Inese Kokina, and the Head of the REBUS Research and Business Centre Sanita Kecko.

The main theme of the conference focused on intellectual property as a support mechanism for innovation and growth. Special attention was given to patentability and emerging technologies, including the challenges and opportunities they present. Discussions emphasized the role of universities, research institutions, and spin-offs in the transfer of technology and economic development.

Strengthening the intellectual property system and developing a clear strategy for technology transfer are essential steps for Latvia to compete with innovation leaders and to fully leverage its potential in a knowledge-based economy.

These and other significant topics were discussed by internationally recognized intellectual property experts, as well as representatives from the scientific and business communities. The event featured three panel discussions:

Panel 1 : ‘’Main Panel Discussion’’: “Intellectual Property as a Support for Innovation and Growth: Emphasis on Collaboration, Technology Transfer, and SMEs”

   Panelists: Daren Tang (WIPO Director General), Antonio Campinos (EPO President), João Negrão (EUIPO Executive Director), Karin Žvokelj (Director of the Slovenian Intellectual Property Office), James Kelly (Head of the Irish Intellectual Property Office)

Panel 2 : “Patenting New Technologies: Challenges, Strategies, and Opportunities”

Panel 3 : “Technology Transfer and Commercialization – Bridging Research and Industry”
