Scientists from the Daugavpils University Institute of Life Sciences and Technology have been featured on the Estonian Television (ETV) nature program ‘’Osoon’’. The expert team, involved in the project ‘’Baltic wide web for Osmoderma eremita: the creation of an ecological network in the Baltic region (LIFE OSMO BALTIC)’’, shared insights into their research and conservation efforts towards the hermit beetle Osmoderma eremita complex, which is the focus specie of the project.

ETV Nature program “Osoon” has been broadcasted since 1993 and now have already 32 seasons.  This ‘’Osoon’’ episode highlighted the importance of preserving the hermit beetle, and the crucial role of ecological network in its survival. DU scientists discussed species ecology, habitat conditions and possibility for creating and maintaining these networks across the Baltic region, ensuring the long-term viability of the species.

The episode Nr. 1154 aired on Monday, 14th October on Estonian Television, but is available on television archives – https://jupiter.err.ee/1609493065/eremiitpornikas

A key component of the project is the monitoring and research of hermit beetle populations and their habitats. Throughout all the project, DU scientists have planned to involve advanced techniques to gather data on beetle distribution, population dynamics, and the factors influencing their survival. This information is essential for further developing effective conservation strategies and evaluating the project’s success.

The LIFE OSMO Baltic project involves 8 partners from Latvia and Lithuania, dedicated to ensure the protection of the priority species of the EU Habitat Directive – hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita complex) by conducting research, restoring habitats, raising public awareness and creating a sustainable transboundary ecological network connecting Lithuanian and Latvian populations of this species, also attempting to reach the border populations of North Poland and South Estonia.

Project is co-financed by European Union LIFE Environment Programme and State Regional Development Agency of Latvia.
