As the new academic year begins, Daugavpils University enjoyed a warm and welcoming atmosphere – on September 15, 49 Erasmus+ exchange students were officially welcomed at the DU Concert Hall. The goal of these students at DU is not only to complete their chosen study courses and develop professional skills, but also to discover the cultural space of Latvia and Latgale.

This semester, Daugavpils University welcomes students from the following countries:

The students were welcomed into the academic community with inspiring speeches by Inese Kokina, DU Vice Rector for Studies, Mārīte Kravale-Pauliņa, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Natālija Degtjarjova, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Healthcare.

A musical greeting for the students was presented by Glebs Beļajevs, Associate Professor at the Department of Arts, who performed a musical piece.

The event continued with Erasmus+ project coordinator Sandra Celmiņa introducing the students to the upcoming academic year and the activities awaiting them at Daugavpils University. Following this, Jeļena Tamane, Assistant to the Rector, gave a presentation about Daugavpils University and introduced the students to the city of Daugavpils and options for exploring it.

The Daugavpils University Student Council also warmly addressed the international students. Megija Varkale, Chairperson of the Student Council, spoke about student life and opportunities to get involved in the university community.

And, of course, the Erasmus+ Welcome Day wouldn’t be complete without Latvian culture! Together with Marita Irbe, director of the DU student dance ensemble “Laima”, students had the opportunity to discover the rhythms of Latvian folk dances and try out the moves themselves.

We welcome the new members of our international academic community and wish them a successful and inspiring semester at Daugavpils University!
