Daugavpils University invites doctoral students, academic staff, and all interested participants to attend the Doctoral School lecture “Building an Internationally Comparable, Nationally Representative Longitudinal Study: The Case of GUIDE”, which will take place online via Zoom on 26 January 2026 at 14:00.
Prof. Anita Stašulāne, Director of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Daugavpils University, has extensive experience in implementing international research projects and engaging young researchers in academic activities.
When researchers are interested in processes of change, development, and causality, longitudinal data are particularly important. Data collected repeatedly over time from the same individuals, groups, or units offer several key advantages for research. They enable scholars to directly observe how individuals or social phenomena evolve over time, to track life-course trajectories (educational attainment, income, mobility, etc.), to study developmental processes (cognitive or social), and to identify trends such as growth, decline, stability, or turning points.
This 90-minute lecture will explore the experience gained by researchers involved in creating the first internationally comparable, nationally representative longitudinal study of children and young people in Europe: GUIDE – Growing Up In Digital Europe (https://www.guidecohort.eu/). Participants will gain insight into both the achievements and challenges of developing an internationally comparable longitudinal study. The lecture will also discuss the role of empirical data in shaping social policy.
