Academic staff members from the Department of Languages and Literature Participated in the 14th International Congress of Balticists at Vilnius University

From 22 to 25 October 2025, the 14th International Congress of Balticists was held at Vilnius University (Lithuania). The Department of Languages and Literature of Daugavpils University was represented by the Dr. philol., docent Svetlana Polkovņikova and Mg. philol., lecturer Inguna Teilāne, both of whom presented their research at the Congress.

The Congress of Balticists was first organised in 1964 at Vilnius University, and since 1980 it has been held every five years, alternating between Vilnius and Riga. The aim of the congress is to bring together researchers of Baltic languages, promote the exchange of expertise, foster discussions on current issues in the field of Baltic studies, and strengthen interdisciplinary cooperation.

This year, the Congress brought together more than 170 scholars from the United States, Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Latvia, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, and Sweden. The programme featured nine thematic sections: “Current Topics in Baltic Phonetics and Phonology”, “The Tradition and Perspective of Baltic Onomastic Research”, “Baltic-Language Digital Resources in Grammar Research”, “Digital Approaches to Old Baltic Linguistic Monuments”, “Latgalian and Other Regional Varieties of the Baltic Languages: Interdisciplinary Solutions and Research Opportunities”, “Meaning in Baltic Languages: A Cognitive Perspective”, “Prosody and Segments in Baltic Comparative Grammar”, “At the Intersection of Historical Morphology and Syntax: The Baltic Verb from a Diachronic Perspective”, “General Session”.

Dr. philol., docent Svetlana Polkovņikova presented her paper “Verbalisation of Evaluation Categories in Scientific Discourse”in the section “Meaning in Baltic Languages: A Cognitive Research Perspective”, whereas Mg. philol., lecturer Inguna Teilāne presented her paper “Beekeeping Vocabulary in Selected Lexicographic Sources” in the framework on the“General Session”.

Participation of Svetlana Polkovņikova in the congress was supported by the funding from the State Culture Capital Foundation.

The participants from Daugavpils University express their gratitude to the Congress Organising Committee for a professionally organised, content-rich, and inspiring scientific event.
