Daugavpils University, in cooperation with the National Centre for Education, is launching the implementation of EU Structural Fund project No. 8.3.1.1/16/I/002 “Competency-based Approach to Education Content.”
Based on the cooperation agreement concluded on February 21, 2017 between the National Centre for Education and Daugavpils University, on March 1, DU will launch the implementation of EU Structural Fund project No. 8.3.1.1/16/I/002 “Competency-based Approach to Education Content.” The overall objective of the project is to ensure the approval of general education curriculum based on a competence approach in accordance with the description of the compulsory content of general education and the introduction of curriculum at the pre-school, primary and secondary education levels. As a cooperation partner, DU will participate in the development of curriculum for primary and secondary education, as well as in the development of curriculum and teaching materials in Latvian, Russian, social sciences and history for grades 1-12. In addition, highly qualified DU experts involved in the implementation of the project activities will participate in professional development programmes for teachers and seminars for the exchange of experience in the approval of curriculum in approval schools.
DU Vice-Rector for Science, Dr. biol., Professor Inese Kokina: “Daugavpils University has considerable experience in teacher training and professional development in the fields of preschool, primary, secondary and vocational education. This experience is highly valued and recognized worldwide. Since 2013, DU has been operating a UNESCO Chair, which promotes cooperation between internationally recognized experts in the field of education and DU teaching staff, conducts ongoing research in the field of sustainable education, and analyzes and disseminates its findings and practical experience. DU teaching staff and scientists are authors or co-authors of several books and teaching materials. Thus, DU has both qualified human resources and extensive scientific and practical experience to participate in the project “Competency-based Approach to Education Content.” This project is particularly important for strengthening the overall capacity of the Latvian education system and increasing its competitiveness by ensuring the link between developments in general secondary education and the improvement of teacher training programmes in higher educational institutions.
DU’s involvement in the implementation of project activities will continue until the end of 2020.
The funding of the project is EUR 1,105,535.42, including EUR 939,705.11 from the European Social Fund and EUR 165,830.31 from the state budget.
