For several years now, night scientific seminars have been regularly organized for biology students at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Health Care of Daugavpils University. These unique and engaging events are initiated and led by the Rector of Daugavpils University and Head of the Biology Department, professor Arvīds Barševskis.
The seminars are primarily intended for students who choose to focus on beetle research in their bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral theses. Held at the Coleopterological Research Centre Ilgas, the seminars provide an exceptional opportunity for students to engage with professional entomologists, interact with peers across different study levels, and explore current topics in beetle research and biodiversity studies. Throughout the evening and late into the night, participants attend presentations on recent research expeditions, discuss scientific challenges, and share experiences in an informal and inspiring atmosphere. These events not only broaden academic knowledge but also strengthen the sense of community among DU coleopterists.
During the most recent seminar, a small group of biology students visited the Research Centre Ilgas, where they had the privilege to learn from renowned entomologist Dr. Alexander Anishchenko – creator of the global ground beetle database Carabidae of the World. Dr. Anishchenko demonstrated how to collect and prepare beetle specimens properly and introduced students to the use and development of the database, encouraging them to contribute their own findings. These seminars highlight the exciting, hands-on learning environment that Daugavpils University offers.
