According to a recent announcement by coleopterologist Dr. Analyn Anzano Cabras of the University of Mindanao, Philippines, seven additional beetle species endemic to the Philippines have been added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The update was shared via Dr. Cabras’ official post on the social networking platform Facebook.
This important scientific achievement stems from ongoing collaborative research between entomologists at the University of Mindanao and Daugavpils University. Among the newly listed threatened species is Doliops ageometrica Barševskis, 2014, discovered by the Rector of Daugavpils University, professor Arvīds Barševskis. Another listed species, Doliops barsevskisi Cabras & Medina, 2019, was named in honour of professor Barševskis in recognition of his contributions to tropical beetle research.
The inclusion of these species in the IUCN Red List underscores both the ecological significance of the Philippine biodiversity hotspot and the global importance of taxonomic research conducted by DU coleopterologists. These findings not only advance the understanding of insect diversity but also contribute to conservation efforts aimed at protecting endangered invertebrate species worldwide.
