The aim of the master’s study programme is to provide DU students with qualitative theoretical findings and research skill and competence acquisition in theoretical physics, solid state physics, optics, experimental physics, and other relevant sub-programme courses, providing opportunities to continue doctoral studies, competitiveness on Latvian and foreign labour markets.
The main objective of the master’s study programme is to promote students’ theoretical knowledge, inquiry and individual use of research skills of certain problems.
The main tasks of the master’s study programme are:
- to promote students’ acquisition of knowledge, skills in physics in one of the sub-branch: solid state physics, optical communications in physics and physics didactics;
- to ensure the scientific research in selected physics, the summarized results can be collected in master’s paper;
- to develop orientation skills in modern physics and technological achievements; to develop the ability to obtain information;
- to carry out independent scientific research activities, analysis and presentation of results;
- to acquire the physical measurement and data processing skills with modern IT software, which requires independent research activity;
- to promote creative and innovative activities.
As a result of the programme’s acquisition, the graduate will acquire and be able to demonstrate:
Master’s study programme student is able to show depth or extend knowledge and understanding, part of which corresponds to the latest discoveries of physics, and which provides the basis for creative thinking or research, including acting in the different fields in an interface.
Master’s study programme student is able to independently use the theory, methods and problem-solving skills to carry out research activity. Are able to forcefully explain and discuss about complex or systemic aspects of physics science both specialists and non – specialists. Are able to push one’s development and specialization of skills, to assume responsibility for group performance and its analysis, innovations in science branch of physics, to do the work, research or further learning in complex and unpredictable circumstances and, if necessary, modify them with new approaches.
Master’s study programme student is able to independently formulate and critically analyze complicated scientific and professional problems, justify decisions and, where necessary, to do further analysis. Able to integrate different fields of knowledge, to contribute the creation of new knowledge, research methods development, and demonstrate understanding of ethical responsibility for the scientific results of the potential impact on the environment and society.
