The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics was founded on the 29th of January 1996 with the decision of DPU (Daugavpils Pedagogical University) Senate by uniting the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry. However, the dawn of the faculty is connected with Daugavpils Pedagogical Secondary School (founded in year 1921) and Daugavpils State Teacher’s Institute (founded in year1923), that existed till 1940. Natural sciences (biology, physics, chemistry) and mathematics teacher training was also conducted during the years of Soviet authority in Daugavpils Pedagogical institute. Along with the above mentioned specialties, teachers of housekeeping were trained with some pauses.
In Academic year 2007/2008 the faculty had 537 full-time and 55 part-time students, as well as 32 nascent scientists that study in doctoral programmes. The teaching process in the programmes conducted by the faculty is ensured by 75 teachers: 3 professors, 5 associate professors, 22 docents, 23 lectors, 22 assistents. Five departments of the faculty carry out scientific research and provide for theoretical, experimental and practical parts of the studying process.
